Yesterday, I shared that our breakfast room will now be a sitting room for the foreseeable future (until we build the addition on the back of our house). If you missed that post, you can click here to read all about it. I had been contemplating a rug for the room for a few days (ever since our recliners arrived and I put them in the room) since it’s not a room where Matt will need to use his wheelchair, and last night I decided that the room definitely needs some color on the floor.

So I went to my go-to site for rugs to see what I could find. I always go to Overstock for rugs because they carry a large selection of Safavieh area rugs. That’s the brand that I have in our living room, so I know it’s a tried and true brand for me. I like that they have a large selection of colorful rugs that are polyester (which last a long time and are easy to clean) and are very low pile (which is good just in case Matt wants to roll his wheelchair onto the rug). Plus, they’re not expensive.

I would never pay a fortune on a fancy rug because (1) I change my mind and like to switch things up often, (2) I have a 100-pound dog who likes to spend a lot of time outside, and then comes in and does a whole lot of running, jumping, and twirling, and (3) Matt likes to go all around the back yard in his wheelchair, and then comes in and leaves tracks everywhere he goes. So inexpensive, durable, and easily cleanable polyester rugs are a must for our house.

When I decorated the breakfast room several years ago, my biggest regret when it was finished was that I hadn’t used any warm colors in there. It was strictly a purple, green, teal color palette.

I liked it, but those were the days when I was just coming around to warm colors and realizing how much life they add to a room. For all of my love of teal and green (and purple, which was new for me then), I’ve learned that I like those colors better when balanced with at least some warm colors. Pinks are my favorites, but I’m also drawn to oranges and yellows.

So this was my opportunity to correct that oversight and inject some much needed warmth next to my teal kitchen and in the breakfast room with the purple buffet and benches. With that in mind, here are a few that caught my eye.

This was almost my top pick, and if I were just going by the manufacturer’s product pictures, I would have chosen this one. But there are several customer pictures of this rug, and the colors didn’t look this vivid. It was still very pretty, but just not quite what I wanted.

It also comes in these colors with the teal more dominant. I love this as well, but I figured it might be too much teal being right next to my teal kitchen.

And it also comes in these colors that I love.

This one is a different brand, but it seems to fit all of my requirements. However, every single one of the customer pictures made the colors look much darker than they appear here.

It also really liked the same rug in these colors. Unfortunately, the sizes that would work in our sitting room were sold out.

So which one did I choose? It’s funny, because based just on the pictures above, I chose the one that seems the least likely (at least to me) to be my pick. But I chose the third one in light blue and fuschia.

I sure hope I like it! It would not have been my pick just based on the manufacturer’s product pictures. But as I was looking through the customer uploaded pictures, this is the one that kept catching my eye over all of the others. So we’ll see how it turns out. I think this is the first time I’ve ever been more influenced by customer pictures than the manufacturer’s pictures, and I hope that decision doesn’t bite me in the end.

Of course, if I don’t like it, I’ll return it and get one of the other options above. But one thing I know for sure is that I love this opportunity to inject some warm colors into that room. It’s needed it all along (in my humble opinion), but I didn’t want to redo just for the sake of redoing when there’s so many other rooms and projects that need my attention. So I can thank Matt for this opportunity! 😀
